there is a place for beautiful print in a designer’s heart, when the print piece happens to be a publication called gratuitous type, even better. it’s nice that features the magazine and details an accompanying gallery show and podcast if one medium is not enough to satiate your design habit.
typography has always been the marriage of form and function and has to be one of the most practical and ubiquitous applications of design. and while the overall foundation of all typefaces has varied little since gutenberg the technology by which we apply them has tremendously evolved. it’s nice that features dan rahtigan and the development of ryman eco. this font takes ink trapping to a whole new level in an effort to conserve resources.
color is likely the most powerful visual communicator… it can evoke emotion and action across barriers and borders alike. the visual community has always been on the journey to capture many of the magnificent hues we experience in the real world. it has in fact been turned into a science of sorts with color companies like pantone breaking onto the pop-culture radar. a man on a mission, more specifically a professor, has developed a tree the blooms in color only imagined in a dr. suess world. sam van aken has grafted together 40 different fruit trees that bloom and bear fruit creating a color spectacle to amaze.
while designers near and far are occasionally guilty of swearing at adobe illustrator… cursing, mostly in vain, a program that changed the industry. and though we may not want admit it in the heat of the moment, illustrator has made our lives and jobs easier while opening the possibilities to new styles and applications. take a walk down memory lane with a compact retrospective on the program that has made itself quite at home in our digital toolbox.

paper and stop motion films would probably fit comfortably on the list of designers’ favorite things. kelli anderson and her team have combined the two to create an app promo for tinybop to the great visual delight of grownups and kids-at-hearts too. she details the process with a lovely collection of photos and behind-the-scenes video to capture the enormity and detail of this project on her blog for all of use to inconspicuously peek over the makers’ shoulders.
if you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, can you at least admire it’s binding? aram gallery does just that in their exhibition of tomorrow’s past collective’s work conserving antique tomes with their exquisite craftsmanship marrying the past and present in the name of preservation.
